Self Help Remedies for Sinus Problems

Acupressure

The simplest self help technique is to use pressure on the acupoints marked below.  Use bilateral pressure, (the points are both sides of your face/head so press them both simultaneously), in the following order: SI18, LI20, St1, B1, B2 and then GB14 and repeat until the points are less sore.  This pattern helps relieve the pain of a sinus headache and opens the sinuses to drain.
Hand reflexology - If you want to try some self help reflexology, the sinus ‘reflexes’ are located on the balls of all your fingers and toes but obviously its much easier to work your own fingers than toes!

Take the thumb of the right hand, bend it slightly and practice ‘walking’ the ball of the thumb across the palm of the opposite hand.  The movement you’re looking for is like the movement of an inch-worm.   Now repeat this movement on the ball of each finger of the left hand, moving across from right to left, top to bottom, and diagonally from top left to bottom right and vice versa.  You may discover some ‘crunchy’ or ‘bumpy’ feelings as you thumb walk the tips of each finger.  This will help unblock your sinuses, so work the crunchy spots really well.   Switch thumbs and thumb walk the fingertips of the right hand with your left thumb.

Essential Oils - The most useful oils that you can use for sinus problems are eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, peppermint, and tea tree oil.  Use in massage, or just add to an oil burner.

Use a blend of 2 drops each of eucalyptus and rosemary oil with a carrier oil to help clear congestion in the nasal passages, or use a blend of peppermint oil with a carrier oil which can be massaged into the temples.

Add a few drops of eucalyptus, lavender and tea tree oil to a hot bath, and soak in this for a while. Or fill a large bowl of boiling water with four or five drops of essential oils to make a steam inhalation that will clear your sinuses.   Soak a flannel, wring out and apply warm flannel to the face or where you are experiencing pain. This is a great way to use the left over water from the inhalation or as an alternative to inhalation.

You can put eucalyptus, peppermint and rosemary together. Other than blending well, they also have strong individual healing and antiseptic properties, with help in fighting colds and flu.

Promote clearing of nasal congestion and use 2 drops of rosemary, eucalyptus or tea tree essential oils on a handkerchief for inhalation therapy.

Crystals - crystals can be worn or gently held against the affected area.  Crystals suggested for sinus problems include clear and purple fluorite, snowflake obsidian, sodalite and tourmalinated quartz.
